The PhotoPills app is a one-of-a-kind tool that allows photographers to plan and execute their shots with precision. It includes features like a sun and moon calculator, rise/set times, and a shadows tool. With the PhotoPills app, you can plan your photo shoots down to the minute, ensuring that you get the perfect shot every time.
How to Use PhotoPills
Assuming you have the PhotoPills app installed on your smartphone, here is a step-by-step guide on how to use it:
1. Open the app and select the 'Planner' tab at the bottom of the screen.
2. Use the search bar to find your location or alternatively, manually scroll and zoom in/out on the map until you've found your desired spot.
3. Once you've found your location, click on the '+' symbol in the top right corner to add a new 'Pill'.
4. A pop-up window will appear where you can set the date and time for your Pill. Make sure to toggle on the 'Sun' button so that you can see where the sun will be at your chosen time. 5. Click 'Add Pill' and your new Pill will appear as a yellow dot on the map. You can move it around to adjust the position and timing.
6. To see more information about your Pill, click on it and a box will appear with all sorts of data like sunrise/sunset times, moon phases, golden hour etc.
7. Once you're happy with your Pill, click on the 'Camera' icon in the top right corner to open up the Camera Simulator. 8. Here you can see exactly what your scene will look like at your chosen time and date! You can also change up the camera settings to play around with different compositions.
Pros & Cons
Advantages:
1. No need for a physical planner - everything is digital and stored on your phone
2. You can plan photo shoots well in advance and see a visual representation of the sun, moon, and Milky Way's position at any given time and date
3. Get reminde rs for when certain events (like the golden hour) will happen so you don't forget to take advantage of them
4. The app also has a built-in camera with some neat features like the ability to add an artificial horizon line
Disadvantages:
1. Because it's all digital, if you lose or break your phone, you lose all your plans
2. The app can be glitchy and slow at times
3. It can be difficult to input all the necessary data for planning purposes (although this has gotten better with recent updates)
